“Okay,” Gwen said, swallowing her disappointment, because she was somewhat desperate to finish what they’d started, but the fake sex was over, and now Mallory wanted to stop, which was fine. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Mallory said, still not looking at her.

Gwen backed onto her knees to give her some space.

Mallory slid off the bed and headed for the door, gesturing for Gwen to follow. “I’m tired of having an audience,” she said as she led the way into the living room.

“I don’t know how you deal with knowing she can hear basically anything you do in your bedroom.”

“I didn’t really think about it until recently, when she started having wild sex over there, but yeah…I hate it.” Mallory frowned as she walked to the kitchen and poured herself another shot of whiskey.

Gwen nudged her own glass toward the bottle, and Mallory filled it for her. Silently, they faced each other as they downed their shots. Heat crackled in the air between them. Gwen was buzzing with unreleased tension after all that fake sex, and she suspected Mallory was too, but maybe she was embarrassed about what they’d done now that it was over. Gwen didn’t want their evening to end on a weird note.

“For the record, that was fun, in a totally crazy kind of way. Can’t say I’ve ever faked sex before.” She gave Mallory a goofy smile. “And I apologize if I made you uncomfortable by kissing you. I got caught up in the moment.”

“You didn’t make me uncomfortable,” Mallory said, staring at the empty glass in her hand. “I just…”

“What?” Gwen pressed, because if this was about what Luci had said, Gwen had a few things to say about that.

“Nothing,” Mallory said, setting her glass on the counter a little harder than necessary.

“Just throwing this out there—no pressure or strings attached—but you said you weren’t ready for a relationship, and I’m totally fine with casual sex. I could be your rebound girl if you want to try what we did in there for real. It wouldn’t have to change anything for our friendship if you don’t want it to.”

“I’ve never done that before,” Mallory said, pouring herself another shot.

“I have,” Gwen told her. “It can be a lot of fun in the right situation, and I think tonight definitely falls into that category. I could help you get over those hang-ups Luci put in your head, and we both get to finish what we started in your bedroom, so to speak.”

Mallory’s cheeks turned bright red as she slammed another shot. “I’m not like that in real life.”

“No?” Gwen countered. “Sounded to me like you were reacting to what we were doing and maybe what you wanted us to be doing. I know I was.”

“Maybe,” Mallory said quietly, reaching for the bottle of whiskey, but Gwen slipped it out of her grasp with a smile.

“Better slow down,” she said gently. “If we decide to do this, I need you sober enough to consent.”

Mallory blew out a breath, hands gripping the counter.
